MANJUNG: A schoolgirl was injured after a car driven recklessly by a male suspect crashed into a school premises, striking the student during a volleyball practice session.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the incident happened at 5.30pm yesterday when the man drove a white Myvi in a dangerous manner through Taman Bintang, Pantai Remis.
Hasbullah said witnesses report the car crashed through the gate of a basketball court, completely destroying it, before the driver proceeded towards a nearby secondary school.
"The vehicle entered the school grounds and drove directly to the school hall where students were practicing volleyball.
"Without warning, the car struck one of the female students, leaving her with injuries to her left leg. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident," he said in a statement today.
He said the injured 13-year-old student was taken to Seri Manjung Hospital, where she remains under treatment for her injuries and reported to be in stable condition.
"Police managed to locate and arrest the 47-year-old man at 6.50pm. The white Myvi involved in the incident was also seized."
He added that police have confirmed that the suspect is undergoing a mental health evaluation at Seri Manjung Hospital due to concerns over his psychological state.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
