IPOH: The number of people who sustained severe injuries when a double-decker express bus crashed into a divider at KM273 of the North-South Expressway near Gunung Lang here has increased to four people.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the four were among 34 passengers travelling in the express bus during the accident.
He added that 19 passengers including three children suffered minor injuries while 11 others escaped the accident unharmed.
Abang Zainal said preliminary investigation the bus was heading to Kuala Lumpur from Penang before the 56-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle which crashed into the road divider in the 12.15am accident.
"All passengers injured during the accident were sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment," he said in a statement.
Abang Zainal also said no arrests were made since the bus driver tested negative for drugs.
The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Roads Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
He also urged the public with information on the accident to contact investigation officer Inspector Muhammad Syafiq Fauze at 013-6713177 or the nearest police station to assist the investigation into the case.
It was earlier reported that three people sustained serious injuries when they were trapped in the vehicle during the accident.
"The three passengers trapped in the bus were handed over to the medical team for treatment after being extricated by the rescue team," Ipoh Fire and Rescue station chief Azman Hussin said, adding that the operation to rescue the passengers ended at 2.45am.
