Speedy Tigresses take Asian hockey by storm

KUALA LUMPUR: Few gave the Speedy Tigresses a chance at the ongoing women's Asian Champions Trophy, yet they've defied expectations by storming into the semi-finals.

The national women's hockey team finished third in the round-robin stage in Bihar, India, with two wins and three losses.

Their reward is a showdown against Paris Olympic silver medallists China — albeit their second team — in tomorrow's semi-final clash.

This achievement provides a rare bright spot for Malaysian hockey, especially after the Speedy Tigers — the men's senior team — fell short in several tournaments this year.

Led by coach Nasihin Nubli, the Malaysian side feature a blend of experience and youth, with 10 senior players and eight juniors.

The tournament is also part of their preparations for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya.

During the round-robin matches in Bihar, world No. 24 Malaysia edged world No. 15 South Korea 2-1 and defeated world No. 29 Thailand 2-0 but suffered defeats to India (4-0), China (5-0), and Japan (2-1).

Nasihin commended his players for their fighting spirit and resilience.

"We fielded a mixed squad of seniors and juniors, and they delivered, battling bravely in every match," said Nasihin.

"Finishing fifth last year, reaching the semi-finals this time is a massive achievement."

Looking ahead to the match against China, Nasihin said the pressure will be on the world No. 6.

"We urge all Malaysians to support and cheer for the team tomorrow. I believe we can challenge China and maybe pull off a surprise," he said.

Malaysia's best result in the ACT was finishing third in the 2013 Japan edition.

Tomorrow's fixtures
