Bursa Malaysia nearly flat on profit taking

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia closed in the red on Tuesday dragged by profit-taking activities by investors.

At 5pm today, the FBM-KLCI was at 1,597.96, marginally down 0.24 points from Monday's close of 1,598.20.

There were 715 gainers, 459 losers and 469 counters traded unchanged on the Bursa Malaysia.

Turnover was at 5.393 billion shares valued at RM3.988 billion.

Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said the FBM KLCI ended flat as gains in the utilities and industrial products heavyweights was offset by losses in telco heavyweights.

The firm said the latter decline was due to analysts's neutral stance on Telekom Malaysia Bhd which may have spurred profit taking in the sector.

"Meanwhile, the market breadth was positive as gainers led losers at 715-to-459 stocks," it said in a note.

Among the heavyweight counters, Malayan Banking Bhd was two sen higher at RM9.99, Public Bank Bhd was one sen higher RM4.04, while Tenaga Nasional Bhd was flat RM14.00.

On the actives, UUE Holdings Bhd rose 45.5 sen to 70 sen, Valesto Energy Bhd was one sen higher at 28 sen, while Hiap Teck Venture Bhd rose 2.5 sen to 47 sen.
