Number of flood victims in Perlis surges as high tide peaks

KANGAR: The number of flood victims affected by the high tide phenomenon in Perlis has risen to 469, now housed in two temporary flood relief centres, compared to just 20 yesterday.

The surge occurred as the high tide phenomenon peaked this morning, with water levels reaching 3.7 metres, flooding several villages in Seberang Ramai, Kuala Perlis, near here.

State Civil Defence Force operations officer Saifuddin Abdullah said that as of 8am, the affected areas include Kampung Pulau Ketam, Kampung Hujung Tanjung, Kampung Tanah Baru, and Kampung Baru Kuala Perlis.

"The Kuala Perlis Institut Kemahiran Bina Negara (IKBN) flood evacuation centre is currently housing 182 people from 53 families, while 287 people from 106 families have been relocated to the SK Seberang Ramai temporary relief centre," he said in a statement today.

He added that weather conditions have improved, and the water level is gradually receding.

"We have deployed personnel to monitor this phenomenon, which is expected to occur nightly along the coastal areas from Kuala Perlis to Kuala Sanglang until Oct 22," he added.
