KUALA LUMPUR: Viktor Axelsen has brought in Danish legend Peter Gade to join his coaching team as the two-time Olympic champion aims to sustain his dominance on the World Tour.
Axelsen, 30, who has been training under his father-in-law Henrik Rohde in Dubai since claiming Olympic gold in Tokyo 2021, announced the addition of Gade, 47, to his set-up via Instagram.
The world No. 2 believes Gade's vast experience and longevity in the sport — having competed at the highest level until age 35 — will be invaluable as he seeks to extend his career.
"After winning my second Olympic gold in Paris, it's the right time to make some changes to my set-up," said Axelsen.
"I'm thrilled to announce that Gade will join my coaching team. He and Rohde will work together to manage my training and coaching programmes.
"Whenever I'm in Denmark, I'll also train at Gade's academy to prepare for key tournaments.
I was fortunate to train with him during the latter stages of his career, and his knowledge of the game and experience playing into his 30s will help me tackle future challenges."
Axelsen has had a mixed results since his Paris triumph, with a lone Super 500 Hong Kong Open title in four outings.
However, the addition of Gade is expected to provide the spark needed to regain consistency.
The Dane will next play in the China Masters, starting Tuesday in Shenzhen, after a semi-final exit at the Kumamoto Masters in Japan.
Axelsen's rivals will likely face an even more formidable challenge as Gade's expertise could fuel the reigning Olympic champion's pursuit of more titles.
