RANAU: A climber, 53, died after collapsing and losing consciousness on Mount Kinabalu yesterday.
The victim, a Malaysian man, collapsed at Km8.3 of the trail about 5.30am.
Ranau police chief Deputy Superintendent Simiun Lomudin today said his team was informed of the death at 11am.
He said the victim began the climb from Timpohon Gate on Tuesday with his wife and nine other group members, including three guides.
"At Km8.3, the victim collapsed and lost consciousness.
"A guide administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation but was unable to save the victim."
The victim was carried down to Timpohon Gate by the Mount Kinabalu Search and Rescue Team and was pronounced dead by a medical officer.
"The victim's body was taken to Ranau Hospital for a post-mortem."
"The case is classified as sudden death."
Simiun said those wanting to climb Mount Kinabalu should ensure they were in good health.
