Couple dies after drunk driver runs red light in Pasir Gudang

PASIR GUDANG: A 37-year-old man and his wife were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was involved in an accident with a car driven by a man under the influence of alcohol yesterday.

The man and his wife succumbed to their injuries and died on the spot in the accident which occured at a traffic light junction in Jalan Besar/Jalan Mesjid here.

Seri Alam district police chief Superintendent Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the accident is believed to have occurred when the car was traveling from Jalan Besar towards the Pasir Gudang Highway.

Upon reaching the scene, the car driver ran the red light and crashed into the couple, who were heading towards Pasir Gudang.

"The car driver, 34, believed to be under the influence when he drove the vehicle, has been arrested to facilitate investigation into the accident," he said in a statement today.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by driving under the influence.
