KUALA LUMPUR: The National Economic Action Council (NEAC) today scrutinised the "Empowerment of the Railway Industry" paper, focusing on the urgent need for rationalisation of the national railway industry based on the objectives of the Railways Act 1991.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, in line with the subsidy rationalisation plan, the government was actively focusing on enhancing the network, infrastructure and quality of public transportation services.
"The meeting also detailed the steps to ensure that Komuter and electric train services, as well as the Ekspres Timuran by KTM Bhd, can meet current and future passenger frequency and volume needs.
"During the meeting, I also emphasised the importance of addressing fundamental issues and implementing decisions promptly, as they are crucial for achieving the objectives and desired economic and social impacts envisioned by the government, which should be felt by the people according to the schedule and interrelationships within the framework of Malaysia Madani and Madani Economy," he said in a Facebook posting.
Anwar added that the meeting, which he chaired, also discussed the current development following the implementation of targeted diesel subsidies in Peninsular Malaysia, which began today.
"The meeting was informed that there was a sudden increase in the number of applications for Budi Madani individual and Budi Madani Agri-commodity cash aid programmes, which is being implemented through https://budimadani.gov.my."
Anwar said the first group of eligible individuals will receive RM200, deposited into their bank accounts starting today.
To cushion the impact of the new price of diesel, the government has introduced the Budi Madani individual and Budi Madani Agri-commodity cash aid programmes, where around 30,000 recipients will get RM200 in their respective accounts.
