Single mum jailed for robbing foreigners, suspected accomplice claims trial

MUAR: A single mother was sentenced to nine years in prison by the sessions court here today, after she pleaded guilty to robbing five foreigners in Muar and Tangkak last August.

Jamiyana Ab Aziz, 38, admitted to six charges read before judge Nariman Badruddin.

Her alleged accomplice, Abd Aziz Alhaffiz Ali, 36, pleaded not guilty and will face trial in January.

The charges stated that the duo carried out group robberies targeting foreigners.

Between Aug 5 and 17, the pair robbed cash, jewellery and electronic items from their victims in Tanjung Agas in Tangkak and Kampung Sabak Aur in Muar.

On Aug 17, between 2.30pm and 5pm, the accused robbed three foreigners of RM620, a watch and mobile phones, the court was told.

On Aug 5, between 5am and 6am, they allegedly stole rings, earrings and necklaces from two victims in Parit Zin Bakri, Batu 6 in Muar.

Both were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment, whipping, or fines upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Ariff Marzuki prosecuted.

Jamiyana was unrepresented.

Abd Aziz was represented by Syafiee Naim from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

The court sentenced Jamiyana to four years in prison for the first three charges and five years for the remaining three charges, with all sentences are to run concurrently from Aug 19, the date of her arrest.

Abd Aziz's trial is scheduled for Jan 27.

According to the charge sheet, police investigations revealed the duo's method involved targeting foreigner at supermarkets.

Jamiyana approached the victims, and offered transport services for a fee. Once victims agreed, they were driven to secluded locations, where the suspects allegedly brandished a toy gun to intimidate them before seizing valuables.

The suspects reportedly used the stolen items to fund their drug addiction.

Victims lodged reports at the Ledang and Bakri police stations on Aug 19 and Aug 22, respectively.

Before sentencing, Nariman urged Jamiyana to reflect on her actions during her imprisonment.
