#SHOWBIZ: If you can't afford it, don't go into debt – Aliff Syukri

KUALA LUMPUR: "Ukur baju di badan sendiri (measure the clothes according to your own body). If you feel you can't afford it, don't wear it and go into debt."

These words of caution come from celebrity entrepreneur Datuk Seri Aliff Syukri, addressing a trend where some individuals, especially businessmen and influencers, take on debts to maintain a luxurious image.

Aliff emphasised that loans are obligations that must be repaid to avoid complications in the future.

"Many businessmen and influencers in our country live lavish lifestyles—flying business class, wearing designer clothes—yet they are deeply in debt. It's even sadder when some of them are still living in rented homes," he said.

"There's no harm in displaying luxury, but ensure you've paid your taxes and cleared your debts. Otherwise, it can lead to resentment. Showing off while burdened with debt not only affects you but also the lenders who trusted you."

Reflecting on his own experiences, Aliff shared, "I've had many people owe me money. When they want to borrow, they're all sweet talk, but when it's time to repay, it's as if I'm the one in the wrong. Whether the debt is large or small, as a Muslim, it must be repaid. Unpaid debts can even affect your afterlife."

He added that this serves as a personal reminder for him to remain prudent.

"I'm not trying to offend or criticise anyone. Today might be someone else's day, but tomorrow could be my turn. This is just my advice and a reminder to myself as well," he concluded.

Meanwhile, sensational entrepreneur and social media personality Liana Rosli, also known as Kak KM, highlighted the inevitability of debt when purchasing significant assets.

"If we want to own property, buy a car, or a bungalow, it's almost impossible to pay everything in cash. Debt to the bank is normal, but it must be repaid. Debt between people, however, becomes haram if unpaid," she explained.

Kak KM advised against taking on unnecessary debts for appearances.

"For instance, if your salary is RM5,000, buying a handbag worth tens of thousands is unwise. Live within your means. Stylishness achieved through debt is self-deception."

She also acknowledged that for entrepreneurs, wearing branded items can inspire confidence and success.

"As a businessperson, I wear branded items to motivate others. It boosts my confidence and satisfaction. But always remember to balance ambition with accountability," she said.
