KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 9 S. Sivasangari's hopes of avenging her recent defeat to three-time world junior champion Amina Orfi were dashed in the women's semi-finals of the Singapore Open today.
The 17-year-old Egyptian, who defeated the Malaysian in last week's Malaysia Cup final, won 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8 in 64 minutes.
It was Amina's third win over Sivasangari in four encounters.
In the men's competition, Malaysia Cup champion Ng Eain Yow also saw his impressive run halted in the semi-finals.
The world No. 14, who stunned European champion Victor Crouin on Friday, put up a valiant effort before falling 13-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6 to Egypt's world No. 1 Ali Farag.
National chief coach Ajaz Azmat praised the duo despite the losses
"It is the first time we had two Malaysian players in the semi-finals of a Gold-level event," said Ajaz.
"Eain Yow gave a commendable performance, taking a game off Farag. Sivasangari struggled in the first two games against Amina but overall, I am proud of her efforts."
