Sepak takraw association hopes international body will re-think 15-point format

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (STAM) is hoping the International Sepak Takraw Federation (Istaf) will re-evaluate their decision to implement the new 15-point format.

STAM president Datuk Sumali Reduan said he received negative feedback regarding the new points system, which also limits tekong to one service attempt, at the ongoing Sepak Takraw World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

The new format came into effect earlier this year. Previously the sport implemented a 21-point system which allowed three service attempts.

"In general, a lot of people have expressed their dissatisfaction with this new system," said Sumali yesterday (May 21).

"I had previously informed them (Istaf) that we do not agree with this new system, however, when Istaf made the decision, we had to follow.

"Maybe after this competition Istaf can re-evaluate the situation based on what happened at the World Cup.

"Some have said the matches have become too fast, especially if they are one-sided.

"I think the 21-point system can still be used but retain this new one-service attempt rule. Malaysia has suggested this before."

On a separate note, Sumali said that national team players will be rewarded if they show outstanding performances at the World Cup.

"I told the players that I cannot promise them the moon. However, if they play well, the rewards will come," added Sumali.

"If they are really outstanding, insyaallah, there will be a bonus which commensurates with their efforts."

The national doubles and inter-regu teams have had a strong tournament so far and will play Thailand in both finals at the Titiwangsa Stadium tonight (May 22).
