KUALA LUMPUR: National doubles pair Aidil Aiman Azwawi-Noraizat Mohd Nordin achieved the unimaginable after beating heavyweights Thailand to win the title at the Sepak Takraw World Cup here tonight.
The duo, backed by a raucous home crowd, eked out a 17-16, 15-13 win over Thailand's Seksan Tubtong-Kittiphum Sareebut at the Titiwangsa Stadium.
Malaysia raced off to an early lead at the Titiwangsa Stadium and at one point held a six-point advantage before being reeled in by Thailand.
Aidil-Noraizat, however, held their nerves to make it count when it mattered to take the opening set 17-16.
The second set opened with the same intensity, going point-for-point before Aidil-Noraizat closed out the set and the match 15-13.
Malaysia has never won a category at the World Cup before.
Malaysia will face Thailand in the inter-regu final later tonight.
