Wan Arif-Roy King soak up lessons from Korean stars

KUALA LUMPUR: Up-and-coming Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King hope to turn their tough Malaysia Open debut into a stepping stone towards their first World Tour title.

The world No. 23 Malaysian duo suffered a 21-17, 21-11 defeat to South Korea's Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae in 45 minutes at the Axiata Arena on Wednesday.

It was a maiden Malaysia Open appearance for Arif-Roy King, who faced the experienced Korean scratch pairing.

The Korean team have been experimenting with new combinations following the Paris Olympics.

Seo Seung Jae, a 2023 world champion with regular partner Kang Min Hyuk, teamed up with Kim Won Ho after Min Hyuk began mandatory military service. Won Ho, meanwhile, clinched the mixed doubles gold at the Paris Olympics with Jeong Na Eun.

Despite the loss, Arif believes the experience will sharpen their skills.

"This was a valuable experience, even though we couldn't put up a better fight. Our target this year is to win a World Tour title, and matches like this are part of the journey," said Arif.

He noted the Koreans' impeccable serves and rock-solid defence, which proved decisive.

Despite his defeat, Roy King found a silver lining as he had faced his idol, Seung Jae.

"Seung Jae is my favourite player. He's a master at playing two events, just like me. There's so much to learn from him," Roy King said.

"This experience will help us grow as a pair, and we'll stay positive while working towards better results."

Roy King is focused on men's doubles for now, as his mixed doubles partner, Valeree Siow, is sidelined with a knee injury.

Arif-Roy King are also aiming to break into the world's top 15 while also pursuing a World Tour title.
