KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has agreed to strengthen its collaboration and joint efforts with all component parties of the unity government.
Its secretary-general, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, said this reflected a manifestation of the party's seriousness and commitment to ensuring political stability, the welfare of the people and national prosperity.
"Umno members at all levels are urged to maintain a high level of preparedness to assist the people, regardless of party ideology or ethnicity, in line with Umno's long-standing tradition," he told reporters after tonight's Umno supreme council meeting chaired by president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Asyraf Wajdi said Barisan Nasional's big win in the recent Mahkota state by-election in Johor was a clear signal that the public positively accepts the model of cooperation in the unity government.
This, he said, was based on the principles of moderation, tolerance and avoiding extremism in religious or ethnic sentiments that could undermine the harmony of a multiethnic society.
He thanked the voters in the constituency for their trust in BN.
He also thanked the entire election machinery of the unity government, including BN component party partners, Friends of BN and Pakatan Harapan, for their collective efforts in successfully persuading the voters in Mahkota.
"The meeting emphasised that this victory should not lead Umno to become arrogant.
"Instead, it should ensure that the mandate given by the people is fulfilled as best as possible, with humility and responsibility," he said.
On Sept 28, BN retained the Mahkota state seat in Johor with a massive majority 20,648-vote majority.
BN candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah garnered 27,995 votes to Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar's 7,332 votes.
