KUALA LUMPUR: The unity government will be represented by a Barisan Nasional candidate in the upcoming Nenggiri by-election in Kelantan.
Unity government secretariat chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision was reached during Tuesday's meeting of the leadership council chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The meeting was attended by the top leadership of BN and Pakatan Harapan, he said in a statement.
He added that leaders of both coalitions have committed to providing full support to assist the BN candidate representing the unity government.
The Election Commission (EC) has set Aug 17 as polling day for the Nenggiri by-election, with early voting scheduled for Aug 13.
Nomination day falls on Aug 3.
The by-election was held after its incumbent, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, had his membership in Bersatu terminated.
Under the Kelantan Constitution, a seat is considered vacant if the assemblyman has his party membership terminated.
