KLIA QR code clearance to be expanded to Asean travellers [WATCH]

SEPANG: The quick response (QR) code system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will be expanded to travellers from Asean countries departing Malaysia.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the system would facilitate travel for Asean delegates attending over 400 meetings in Malaysia this year, in conjunction with the country's chairmanship of the bloc.

It will also simplify and speed up immigration clearance for Asean tourists ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

"The responsibility of the ministry, particularly the Immigration Department, as directed by the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), is to ensure seamless traffic flow at entry points.

"We will focus on Asean first because the majority of our tourists come from Singapore and Thailand," Saifuddin told a press conference.

He added that the system would also be expanded to other airports with international flights, such as Penang International Airport and Kuching International Airport, this year.

Earlier, Saifuddin hailed the QR code system as a "game changer" after using it this morning, clearing immigration in just four seconds.

The manual process, where travellers queue for passport inspection at immigration counters, can take up to 20 minutes. The QR code is generated through the MyBorderPass application.

Last week, Saifuddin announced the system's trial for Malaysians at 40 special lanes in both terminals to ease congestion during peak hours and festive seasons.

The Immigration Department has reminded Malaysians to download the MyBorderPass app and verify their details.
