MARAN: The two elderly women who died after the car they were in plunged into a 6m-deep ravine at Km152 of the East Coast Expressway 1 here today have been identified as relatives who were travelling to the Sri Marathandavar Aalayam Temple in Sungai Jerik.
The women were sitting in the rear seats of the Nissan Almera during the 11.07am incident. The driver and front passenger are receiving treatment at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh.
The victims have been identified as V. Kohmathy, 61, from Banting, Selangor, and K. Vasanthy, 60, from Klang, Selangor.
Maran police chief Superintendent Wong Kim Wai said police were alerted to the accident about 11.15am.
"Investigations revealed that the four are relatives who were travelling from Banting to the Sri Marathandavar Temple.
"The 33-year-old woman driving the car lost control of the vehicle. It skidded and plunged into the ravine on the left side of the highway.
"Both rear passengers were killed on the spot. The driver and 24-year-old front passenger sustained serious injuries.
"The remains of the two passengers were taken to Jengka Hospital for a post-mortem," he said today.
Wong said the case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
