PORT DICKSON: A Mitsubishi Triton pickup driver's attempt to flee police for over five kilometres (km) ended in his apprehension at Batu 1, Jalan Pantai, here two days ago.
Port Dickson district police chief, Superintendent Maslan Udin, said the incident occurred at 1.40am during New Year's eve patrols in the Batu 4, Jalan Pantai area.
According to Kosmo!, he said five police patrol vehicles (MPVs) pursued the suspect's vehicle, which was linked to a cable theft incident.
"The 37-year-old man was eventually apprehended by the roadside near the Batu 1 traffic light junction, Jalan Pantai.
"Further inspection of the pickup truck revealed several bags of burnt cables and drugs," he told reporters yesterday.
He said that checks revealed the suspect, who resides in Hulu Langat, Selangor, has 26 previous criminal and drug records.
A urine screening test showed the suspect tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as cannabis.
During the incident, one police officer sustained minor injuries after being struck by the suspect's vehicle.
"The court has remanded the suspect for four days until Jan 4 (tomorrow) as investigations continue under Section 307, Section 379, and Section 353 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act," he said.
Recently, a video of the police chase featuring several MPVs pursuing the Toyota Triton had gone viral on social media.
"The public is urged not to spread this issue, as it may cause unnecessary anxiety among the community.
"During the same patrol, police also arrested two local suspects believed to be involved in the same crime," he added.
