KOTA KINABALU: Esports enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) tournament at the Jom Heboh Carnival, held at the Sabah Sports Complex from today until Sunday.
Media Prima deputy group managing editor Farrah Naz Karim said there has been a change in focus for the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) booth at the final leg of the carnival this year.
"Previously, we featured a mini zoo at the NSTP booth. However, since Sabah is renowned for its wildlife, we decided to shift our focus to esports.
"Malaysia is making waves globally in esports. The growing interest in egaming is very encouraging, and we want to engage as many youths as possible.
"Starting them young in egames, which is a healthy sport, is our goal."Hopefully, wherever we go, we can identify new talents and hone the skills of existing ones," she said when met at the carnival.
Farrah, who is also the NST group editor, added that the booth has been branded as Todak x NSTP "Mari Bah Kita Langgar".
She said the event aims to foster future collaborations with Todak for next year's Jom Heboh Carnival.
Todak chief executive officer Mohd Ikmal Fareeq Shamsul Bahri said the partnership signifies another milestone for Sabah's esports scene."The overwhelming response demonstrates the growing enthusiasm for esports.
"Todak has also partnered with the Sabah Esports Association to strengthen engagement with the local community."
The event will feature appearances by MLBB athletes Moon and Ciku Gais, who recently competed in the World Cup.
"This tournament sets a new benchmark for Todak. After hosting a tournament in Sarawak, we are now in Sabah. I believe this exposure is highly beneficial for the esports scene here," he added.
Ikmal said Todak's primary goal is to scout new talent, especially those under 17, and nurture future professional players.
"Many professional athletes come from Sabah. In 2018, during Todak Fest — which had a prize pool of RM100,000 — the champion team, 'Bosku', consisted entirely of Sabahans.
"Our objective is to discover more talent and use Todak's tournaments as a platform for players to transition into professional teams."
The Todak x NSTP MLBB Tournament offers a total prize of RM6,000 and 20,000 diamonds.
