No confirmation of Malaysians involved in Jeju flight crash yet

KUALA LUMPUR: The Embassy of Malaysia in Seoul is actively gathering information from official sources regarding the Jeju Air flight at Muan International Airport and is closely monitoring the situation.

In a statement, it said there is no confirmation of Malaysian involvement in the incident as of press time.

"The Foreign Ministry is aware of the tragic incident involving Jeju Air flight 7C2216, which veered off the runway and crashed at Muan International Airport.

"The accident, which occurred on Dec 29 (today), has resulted in multiple fatalities.

"The Embassy of Malaysia in Seoul is actively gathering information from official sources and is closely monitoring the situation. At the time of reporting, there is no confirmation of Malaysian involvement in the incident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time," it said.

The plane was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members.

The crash is believed to have been caused by "contact with birds, resulting in malfunctioning landing gear" as the plane attempted to land at the airport in the country's southwest.

Forty-seven people have been killed and two rescued so far, according to South Korea's fire agency.
