KAJANG: The remains of five family members who perished in a five-vehicle accident on the North-South Expressway near Ayer Keroh, Melaka, last night were brought to Surau Al Ikhlas, Section 4 Tambahan, Bandar Baru Bangi, here, for prayers.
The bodies, transported in four separate hearses, arrived at the surau at 5.45pm.
The funeral prayers were attended by about 400 congregants, including family members, friends, and acquaintances who had been waiting at Surau Al Ikhlas since noon.
Among those present were the Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman, and former Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director, Datuk Huzir Mohamed.
After the prayers, all the remains were taken to the Sungai Tangkas Muslim cemetery for burial.
Earlier, the remains of the five family members - Khairul Ikhwan, 32; his wife, Fadzlenna Ramli, 32; their youngest child, Muhammad Umar, 2; and Fadzlenna's parents, Ramli Ab Wahab, 66, and Fauziah Jaafar, 69 - were transported from Melaka Hospital to the surau in hearses that departed at around 4pm.
The accident, which occurred around 8.40pm on Monday at Km204 of the North-South Expressway, involved a tour bus carrying 27 passengers, two lorries, a car, and a multipurpose vehicle.
Investigations revealed that the tour bus hit a lorry tyre that had come off in the middle lane, causing the it to lose control and swerve into the opposite lane, colliding with three other vehicles.
Two others who lost their lives in the crash were the tour bus driver, Noorisnien Khamid, 56, and a Singaporean bus passenger, Lamrah Asid Ali, 66.
Their bodies were also claimed by their respective next of kin after the post-mortem examinations were completed.
