Marine police made over RM200 million in seizures in 2024

PORT KLANG: The marine police have seized more than RM200 million worth of items in over 7,000 operations conducted nationwide this year.

Federal Internal Security and Public Order director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the seizures, recorded as of Nov 30, were among the highest in the force.

"Statistics show that the success rate of marine police operations is among the highest within the police force with seizures and fines amounting to RM216 million from 7,756 maritime crime cases successfully foiled between Jan 1 and Nov 30, 2024.

"The seizures include contraband items, arrest of migrants to controlled goods and border intrusions. These achievements highlight the vital role the marine police play within the force particularly in securing maritime borders and supporting other police units," he said.

Azmi earlier saw the handing over of the marine police commander duties from Senior Assistant Commissioner Norzaid Muhammad Said who is up for mandatory retirement starting tomorrow after almost 39 years of service.

Succeeding Norzaid is Senior Assistant Commissioner Shamsol Kassim who previously served as the marine police deputy commander (general policing/strategic/investigation).

Azmi expressed confidence that under the leadership of Shamsol, the unit would build on its accomplishments.

Commenting on the challenges of the marine police, Azmi said the unit was hampered by a lack of advanced technology and adequate assets.

"The borderless world, coupled with today's advanced technology, requires us to enhance our technological capabilities. Our training has helped mitigate some limitations. However, it remains our most pressing challenge at the moment.

"We hope the government will provide valuable support to the marine police, enabling us to deliver far better services. The unit, however, remains committed to enhancing its operations to ensure Malaysia's maritime security and prevent illegal activities from resurfacing. Our patrols and strategies will be intensified," he said.
