Penang motorists can park for free until app issue resolved

BUKIT MERTAJAM: No action will be taken against motorists who failed to pay their parking charges to the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) starting yesterday.

State Local Government Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said this was because iPhone users were facing difficulties in accessing the Penang Smart Parking (PSP) version 3.0 app after the latest update. However, Android users were not affected.

"iOS users are still experiencing some issues, which we hope will be resolved today. I have issued a directive that until the PSP is operational at both MBSP and MBPP, there will be no enforcement of parking fines.

"Users need not worry because if the PSP app is not working, they cannot pay parking fees at MBSP and MBPP parking spots. They can park without paying and no fines will be imposed," he told newsmen here today.

He was met after the swearing-in of MBSP city councillors at Menara MBSP. The event was attended by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Since yesterday, it was reported that over 3,000 iOS users were facing difficulties in accessing the PSP version 3.0 app after the latest update.

This was a result of incompatibility between the new biometric login function and data from the previous version (2.0.6).

The issue occurred due to the app's failure to sync user verification data for those who updated their app through the Apple Store.

H'ng nevertheless reminded all road users to park in designated parking spaces and not park their vehicles haphazardly as such enforcement by the two local authorities would continue as usual.

"Do not take advantage of the situation and park your vehicle anywhere. While we are relaxing the enforcement of parking fines, other enforcement actions are still ongoing as usual," he added.
