Golok River surpasses danger level, 20 villages at risk of flooding [WATCH]

KOTA BARU: Continuous rain since yesterday has caused the Golok River in Rantau Panjang to surpass its danger level this morning, putting around 20 villages at risk of flooding.

As of 8am, the Golok River was measured at 9.05m, which is 1.05m above its danger mark of 9m.

The 20 villages along the Golok River are home to around 4,000 people.

Two other rivers – the Kelantan River in Kuala Krai and the Golok River in Tumpat – were also recorded above their alert levels.As of 8.45am this morning, no one has been evacuated; however, the situation remains closely monitored.

Malaysia's north-eastern state of Kelantan has been struck by severe flooding in the past couple of weeks, with the east coast receiving six months' worth of rainfall in just five days.

The floods caused damaged roads, destroyed homes, swept-away cars, and displaced communities.

The first round of floods in Kelantan, which began on November 27, has claimed five lives, including that of a one-year-old boy.

Yesterday, Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, director-general of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), stated that continuous rainfall is expected to affect five states through today.

He said a weather warning issued at 12.30pm indicated that the affected areas include the entire state of Perlis, as well as parts of Kedah, such as Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Pendang, Sik, and Baling. The warning also extends to Hulu Perak in Perak.

Additionally, a continuous rain alert has been issued for several areas in Kelantan, including Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh, and Kuala Krai. In Terengganu, the affected areas include Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, and Kuala Terengganu.
