KUBANG PASU: The Home Ministry (KDN) is mobilising its volunteers to assist with clean-up works in flood-ravaged locations under the Insan Madani initiative.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the volunteers will be focusing on rehabilitating mosques, houses of worship, community halls, and schools.
"The KDN volunteers, through the Insan Madani initiative, will be assisting to rehabilitate institutions such as mosques, houses of worship, community halls, and schools. We will also focus on assisting with removing bulk waste such as furniture that was damaged by the floods," he told reporters after visiting evacuees at a temporary flood relief centre (PPS) in SK Bukit Tinggi, Kepala Batas today.
Saifuddin said the matter was decided during a meeting to coordinate post-flood operations between government agencies and volunteer bodies held at Kedah police headquarters last night.
He said the ministry will also utilise its assets such as high-pressure pumps and water cannon to clean up clogged drains, buildings, and other affected areas.
Saifuddin added that the federal government is also looking into financial aid for flood evacuees and repairing damaged infrastructure, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"In the meantime, the Prime Minister has instructed all ministers to go to the ground to make sure that the health aspects and meals for flood evacuees at PPS are well taken care of," he said.
Saifuddin added that he has also instructed the National Registration Department (NRD) to mobilise its 'Menyemai Kasih Rakyat' programme to assist flood victims to replace their identification documents damaged by the disaster, for free.
"The department is deploying its mobile units such as buses and vans to strategic locations to facilitate the flood victims with the process of replacing their MyKad lost during the disaster. The Immigration Department director-general has also agreed to mobilise a similar initiative for passport replacement," he said.
Saifuddin also expressed his appreciation to over 80,000 civil servants from the ministry, with a quarter of them under the ministry, for assisting flood victims with their evacuation and managing their needs at the PPS.
