KUALA LUMPUR: Police collected RM2.1 million in traffic fines on the first day of the 60 per cent discount offered during the Madani government's second-anniversary programme.
Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said a total of 24,400 traffic fines had been settled yesterday (Nov 22).
"The top three most paid summonses were for traffic obstruction, ignoring traffic signs and speeding," he said today.
Yusri also encouraged the public to take advantage of the option to pay their traffic fines online through MyBayar PDRM.
With this, he said, the public need not queue and would receive a QR code coupon from traffic officers stationed along the queue lines for traffic fines at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, along with his deputies, had also visited the booth earlier today and interacted warmly with the public.
"Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has suggested that this discount offer be extended nationwide," Yusri added.
Yesterday, Yusri said the move was aimed at reducing the burden on the public, encouraging them to promptly settle their fines to avoid legal action such as arrest warrants or other penalties.
Earlier today, several motorists attending the event were fined by the police for parking their vehicles on the sidewalk.
However, the motorcyclists claimed there was insufficient parking space provided for them.
In response, Yusri said he would instruct city traffic police to be more lenient with attendees of the programme.
"We will offer some flexibility... but they must not block traffic or cause congestion," he said.
