6 men held on suspicion of illegal hunting

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force detained six men believed to be illegal hunters during an operation on Sunday.

GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the six were travelling in a four-wheel-drive vehicle when they were detained at the Pongsoi Mukim Semantan plantation near Lanchang, Pahang at 11.30pm.

He said they also seized a Remington 879 Express Magnum shotgun, 81 live bullets and various hunting equipment.

The operation, codenamed Op Bersepadu Khazanah, was jointly organised with the Wildlife Department.

"After inspecting the vehicle, the officers found the shotgun and bullets for which they had no valid ownership documents.

"The shotgun and hunting equipment are believed to be used for illegal hunting in the Kemasul Forest Reserve in Temerloh," he added.

He estimated the value of the seizure at RM10,000. The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1971.

"The seized items have been taken to the Temerloh district police headquarters for further action. The suspects, aged between 35 and 61, are being held for further action," he added.

Nik Ros Azhan said the GOF would continue to intensify efforts to curb illegal hunting activities.
