Public Service D-G: Civil servants in sensitive roles capped at three-year tenure

KUALA NERUS: Civil servants holding sensitive positions are not permitted to remain in the same department for more than three years.

Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Abdul Aziz said transfers to different departments or organisations are necessary to prevent exposure to integrity-related misconduct.

He explained that job rotations for each civil servant are stipulated in the Public Service Department circular.

"Civil servants stationed in sensitive departments, especially in procurement, finance and development are not allowed to stay in one organisation for more than three years.

"Those in less risky roles may remain in each organisation for up to five years," he told the media during his visit with federal public officials here today.

Also present were Terengganu Federal Development Department director Abdul Kahar Abdul Latif and the State Deputy Secretary (Development) Datuk Tun Ahmad Faisal Tun Abdul Razak.

At the event, Wan Ahmad awarded scholarships to five public university students through the B40 Scholarship Programme.

He clarified that any transfer involving civil servants between one organisations to another are not due to integrity issues but to support career progression.

"Civil servants should be given exposure to different responsibilities to facilitate promotional considerations," he added.

Meanwhile, Wan Ahmad dismissed claims of a shortage of positions within the public service, especially in key roles such as directors.

"There is no shortage of top positions within government administration. However, filling these roles takes time to ensure that the appointed director or deputy director is well-suited to the position," he said.
