Deepavali or Halloween: Netizen's gripe over mall decorations stirs debate [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A social media user's criticism of shopping malls over Halloween displays close to Deepavali festivities has stirred debate over diversity and culture.

The post by "Puan Sri H" did not single out any mall but questioned why some are putting up Halloween decorations.

"Seriously. Why are malls and public places in Malaysia having Halloween decorations? Since when was it our culture?

"Hello. It's Deepavali season and not Halloween. Have some respect for our fellow Malaysians," she said in the post which has been shared by over 4, 500 people.

Checks by the New Straits Times in several shopping malls in the city found some had put up both Deepavali and Halloween decorations, though most only had Deepavali decorations.

One mall in Bukit Bintang had Halloween decorations at the entrance and Deepavali decorations in a different section.

Another mall in KL was adorned with Deepavali decorations.

Many social media users, agreed with "Puan Sri H's" gripe about the Halloween decorations.

"What is even worse is that even the promoters are wearing Halloween costumes," a user commented.

"Even my child is asking "Do we celebrate Halloween?" another shared.

Other users asked "Puan Sri H" to specify which malls she was referring to.

One user who disagreed with the post said that it does represent the sentiments of all Malaysians.

"I have fond memories of celebrating Halloween as a child, going door to door for treats, and I cherish the celebrations of Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali alongside my mixed-race friends.

"It's simply inaccurate to say that the malls aren't putting up decorations for Deepavali. In fact, many have already started showcasing beautiful displays."

Meanwhile, Malaysia Shopping Malls Association president Phang Sau Lian said most malls have put up Deepavali decorations.

"Deepavali remains a key cultural highlight for Malaysian shoppers, while Halloween is a secondary event by comparison," she said when contacted.

She said malls serve purposes beyond shopping and are spaces for everyone to celebrate various occasions.

"All kinds of celebrations and events help create business opportunities, drive foot traffic, and enhance the mall experience in both traditional and modern ways."
