Anwar to visit Kedah, monitor flood situation tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to visit Kedah tomorrow to monitor the flood situation there.

The matter was confirmed by Deputy Prime Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today (Sept 20).

"The Prime Minister will go to Kedah tomorrow, even though Kedah is governed by others, but the concern for the people is something we will always provide," he said after officiating in the Mara Automotive Ecosystem (Matec) 2024.

Currently, Kedah is led by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor from Perikatan Nasional.

When asked about the National Disaster Management Agency's (Nadma) involvement in helping the flood victims in Perlis, Kedah and Penang, Zahid said the agency had sent its officers to the affected locations and coordinated its operations with others.

He said the Nadma director-general Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus had informed him that the agency would deploy its officers at all temporary relief centres (PPS).

Earlier, the media reported that the flood situation in Kedah had worsened this morning, where a total of 6,104 victims from 1,947 families were sheltering in 38 centres across seven districts in the state.

In Penang, 578 victims had been placed in the state's relief centres whereas in Perlis, only three centres remained open with 113 victims seeking shelter.

Zahid also described Matec as a successful organisation due to the involvement of 4,000 automotive entrepreneurs.

He said the entrepreneurs also employed many graduates from various Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes.

"Matec is an exhibition aimed at involving industry players in automotive and related sectors, as well as those who have been and are still involved in this industry.

"Mara has allocated RM100 million in the form of loans or grants to entrepreneurs in the automotive field, including workshops, which is an encouraging success," Zahid said.
