Sabah govt rolls out programme to boost affordable fish supply in rural areas

KOTA KINABALU: The state government has launched the "People's Fish" programme, aimed at making affordable fish accessible to the public, especially those in rural areas, while stimulating economic growth in the fisheries sector.

Sabah Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, said the term "People's Fish" refers to types of fish sold at lower prices, making them affordable for most, particularly those with lower incomes.

"These fish, such as 'Basung,' 'Lumahan,' 'Kayu,' and 'Mata Merah,' are more accessible and commonly consumed compared to more expensive varieties like salmon or red snapper.

"The programme is expected to be extended to districts such as Tambunan, Keningau, and Ranau, where fish supplies are limited.

"This initiative will ensure that rural communities have better access to affordable and healthy sources of protein," he said at the launching of programme at Padang Merdeka here last night.

He added that although Sabah's fish production has surpassed the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) by over 100 per cent, many in rural areas are still unable to benefit from this abundance due to high prices and inconsistent quality.

Jeffrey also noted that the programme aligns with the state government's focus on food security.

"The success of this programme is expected to attract industry players to enhance fish resources, boost processing activities, increase downstream product production, and expand market areas."

He also commended the role of the Sabah Fish Marketing Authority (SAFMA) in this effort.

"SAFMA's capability in supporting the 'People's Fish' programme is undeniable, given its substantial contribution to the state's fish landings, especially in Kota Kinabalu, which accounted for over 70,000 tonnes last year."
