KUALA LUMPUR: A virtual tour of a Chinese city which has elements of Melaka and Penang has gone viral, capturing the attention of netizens.
Latifah Huang took to TikTok to share a glimpse of a city in China's Fujian province that is filled with Malaysian elements and bears a striking resemblance to the former Straits Settlements.
In the video on 153 , Huang, who speaks fluent Malay, guided viewers through Quanzhou City, highlighting its many Malaysian cultural influences, particularly those of the Peranakan community.
Dressed elegantly in a Nyonya kebaya, Huang showcased the city's Malaysian-inspired features.
These include 'kaki lima' or five-foot ways, the iconic covered walkways commonly found in many olden day shops in Malaysia, which have origins tracing back to Melaka and the other Straits Settlements.
Huang added that Quanzhou also boasts traditional Malaysian kuih and cuisine, Malaysian-style houses, shops selling kebaya, and Peranakan-style architecture.
She said Quanzhou, located in Fujian Province in southern China, is a popular destination among Chinese tourists.
Huang further explained that many of Quanzhou's residents have lived in Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, which contributes to the city's unique blend of local and Southeast Asian cultures.
Meanwhile, netizens in the comment section, expressed their eagerness to see visit the city.
"Are there any packages to go there? It looks interesting... Can Latifah Huang be the tour guide?" wrote Faslie.
