KUANTAN: The Pahang government has received proposals from private investors to build the new Kuantan International Airport (KIA) in Gebeng near here, but has yet to decide on it.
State Public Works, Transport and Health Committee chairman Datuk Razali Kassim today said: "Some private investors have shown a willingness to build the airport and have submitted their proposals.
"We (state government) are still in the discussion stages and going through the proposals.
"The new airport will be privately-funded.
"I was informed that plans for the proposed airport have been principally agreed to by the federal government after it was tabled at the National Physical Planning Council.
"The airport project will be discussed at the executive council meeting next week."
Meanwhile, Razali said the construction site of the proposed airport would remain within the Pahang aerospace city in Gebeng, which encompasses Sungai Ular here until the Pahang-Terengganu border in Kemaman.
On Thursday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said it have not received any application for an aerodrome licence for KIA, for which a company or project developer needs to apply.
It was reported in 2022 that the RM2 billion KIA, part of the Pahang aerospace city project, was expected to be fully operational in 2026.
