Four areas in Masjid Tanah hit by flash floods

ALOR GAJAH: Continuous heavy rain for six hours caused several areas in Masjid Tanah to be hit by flash floods.

Melaka State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) secretariat Lt Col (PA) Kamarulsyah Muslim said as of 4pm, four areas, namely Kampung Paya Lebar, Ramuan China Besar, Taman Masjid Tanah Ria, and Durian Daun, were affected.

In addition to residential areas, the disaster also involved Pekan Masjid Tanah, which was submerged to nearly one metre.

"We are currently in the process of relocating the affected victims to two temporary evacuation centres (PPS), namely at Balai Raya Paya Lebar and PPS Balai Raya Seri Tanjung.

"The number of affected victims has not yet been identified, and rescue operations are ongoing, along with monitoring of water levels," Kamarulsyah said.

Meanwhile, flood victim Khairul Anwar Mansol said continuous heavy rain starting from 5am caused his home to be flooded up to waist level.

"I was only able to save important documents because the water suddenly entered and filled the inside of the house at 10am.

"This is the first incident to happen in my residential area, and for now, my wife, three children, and I are taking shelter at a nearby shop located on higher ground," he said.

Another flood victim, a cattle farmer, Muhammad Nabil Irfan Ibrahim, 22, said water began to fill his cattle pen located in Kampung Ramuan China Besar at around 12pm after heavy rain started at 7am.

"Fortunately, I arrived quickly and managed to release all 20 cattle that were in the pen. Although I had to wade through chest-deep water at that time, I was determined to ensure that the cattle were saved," he said.
