KUALA LUMPUR: After spending three decades in Malaysia as a refugee, a Rohingya man, known only as "Arakan Prince" on TikTok, is finally heading to a permanent home in the United States.
His poignant departure has captured hearts online, as a farewell video showing him unloading his luggage at the airport went viral with nearly 10,000 likes and thousands of views.
Prince's journey began when his family fled persecution in their homeland 30 years ago, seeking refuge in Malaysia. In his viral video, Prince delivers an emotional message of gratitude and hope just as he was about to bid farewell to Malaysia.
"I have spent 30 years of my life in Malaysia as a refugee, and now it is time for me to move on in hopes of reclaiming my rightful identity in the US. Thank you, Malaysia, for giving me and my family a safe place to call home. I will forever be grateful and deeply appreciative of the kindness and generosity shown to us. Looking forward to the next chapter of my life in the US."
The heartwarming message struck a chord with thousands who praised his resilience, selflessness, and contributions to the community. Throughout his years in Malaysia, Prince remained a steadfast advocate for Rohingya children's education, despite the challenges faced by refugee families in accessing public schooling. His efforts with the Arakan Amal Project have given hope to countless children striving for a better future.
News of his impending relocation to the US followed a letter from the United Nations granting him permanent residence. While his departure marks the end of a chapter in Malaysia, it symbolises a new beginning - one filled with the promise of security, identity, and the chance to rebuild a life that has long been shadowed by displacement.
