KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated an investigation into Gunung Semanggol assemblyman Razman Zakaria over a Facebook post that allegedly contained false and offensive content.
The post, made on the account 'Haji Razman Zakaria,' reportedly touched on racially sensitive topics, including the display of a foreign flag during the recent "Malaysia Guang Ze Zun Wang Cultural Festival 2024."
MCMC confirmed that Razman was summoned for questioning after a notice was issued to him to assist in the investigation.
The case is being examined under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which penalises communications deemed to be threatening, obscene, or offensive with intent to harass.
Offenders face a maximum fine of RM50,000, a jail term of up to one year, or both, upon conviction.
Today, MCMC officers also recorded a statement from the administrator of the Facebook account in question.
Communication devices, including a mobile phone and SIM card linked to the account, were also seized to aid the investigation.
The MCMC reminded the public to exercise caution when posting content that may impact social harmony, particularly concerning issues related to race, religion, and royalty (3R).
The commission warned that strict action would be taken against individuals who violate existing laws.
On Friday, Housing and Local Government minister Nga Kor Ming said he planned to take civil action against Razman who allegedly defamed him by alleging he had attended and organised the viral parade.
