Sivasangari wins in Shanghai on Deepavali day

KUALA LUMPUR: S. Sivasangari celebrated Deepavali by breezing into squash's China Open quarter-finals with a 11-6, 15-13, 11-9 win over compatriot Ainaa Amani at Shanghai Oriental Sports Centre on Thursday.

World No.9 Sivasangari, who received a first round bye, will face Scotland's world No. 28 and seventh seed Georgia Adderley next.

Three other Malaysians also reached the last eight.

World No. 36 Aira Azman came back from a set down to beat Egypt's world No. 37 Salma El Tayeb 10-12, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5.

Eighth seed Aira will face Egypt's world No. 18 and fourth seed Sana Ibrahim next.

World No. 30 Rachel Arnold pulled off a good win by upstaging world No. 3 Joelle King of New Zealand 11-8, 11-6, 11-4.

Sixth seed Rachel, who received a first round bye, will face world No. 8 and top seed Rowan Elaraby of Egypt in the quarter-finals.

In the men's competition, world No. 15 and third seed Ng Eain Yow was made to slog by world No. 43 Yahya Elnawasany of Egypt before prevailing 11-4, 7-11, 11-5, 11-2.

The German Open winner will face world junior champion Mohamed Zakaria of Egypt in the last eight.

National chief coach Ajaz Azmat said he was impressed with Rachel's performance as she was very sharp in her shots against the more experienced King.

He added that Sivasangari has been in good form since recovering from a foot injury two weeks ago.

"Eain Yow and Aira also played well against their opponents."
