Blue elephant 'Tatoshka' inspires Pahang shooters

KUCHING: Russian coach Elena Sotnik has been leading the Pahang shooting team in the pistol event for more than two decades since 1999. The 62-year-old has played a crucial role in Pahang's dominance, helping them become Malaysia Games (Sukma) champions in shooting for the last 14 years.

Elena, who is fluent in Malay, is confident that the state's shooters can continue to excel in this year's edition.

"It never crossed my mind to move to another state or train other shooters, including the national squad, although I've never been short of offers.

"These athletes are like my children; we are one big family. I'm proud that my former shooters have built successful careers in shooting — some have even become national coaches," she said at the Sarawak Shooting Range.

Elena has trained many national shooters, including national coach Firdaus Rahim, who now coaches Olympic shooter Johnathan Wong.

Elena is also a key figure in Pahang's success in dominating the 25m standard pistol men's team event at Sukma for 24 years, as they defended their gold medal again this year.

The coach attributes the team's continued success to instilling family values and ensuring cooperation from everyone involved.

"There's no favouritism. Everyone is treated the same way. That's the secret to our success. A positive support system is crucial," she said.

Meanwhile, the Pahang shooting team also captured attention with the presence of 'Tatoshka', Elena's blue elephant stuffed toy.

Elena explained that she has always brought the toy with her to competitions since 2008, including Sukma, as a way to motivate the team.

"This toy has sentimental value as it's a gift from someone. Every time there's a championship, I take it with me, and my athletes always ask, 'Coach, where's Tatoshka?'" she said. – BERNAMA
