KUALA LUMPUR: Phee Jinq En was tired, but it did not stop her from smashing the long standing national 200m breaststroke record at the first Malaysia Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships at the National Aquatics Centre today.
Jinq En, representing DSAS Swim Club, posted a time of 2:27.38 seconds, breaking Chistina Loh's 11-year record of 2:31.86s.
Isabelle Chiyi Buckley of Ikan Bilis Swimming Club was second with 2:35.92s and Low Ee Mang of Kelab Shah Alam Selangor completed the podium with 2:36.19s.
"I wasn't expecting anything like this. This is my third meet in a row after the Singapore Open and the Asean University Games (AUG) last week.
"I literally just came back, had my graduation on Sunday and so I'm really really tired so I wasn't aiming for anything," said Jinq En who graduated on Sunday with a Masters Degree in Communication from Taylor's University.
"I was just trying to do my best because I qualified for the short course world championships at the end of the year.
"So I was treating this like training for the main event in December," said the 27-year-old who was coming off the back of a 50m breaststroke gold and 200m breaststroke silver at the AUG.
"Breaking the record wasn't really on my mind. I knew I want to get it at some point but I didn't think I would get it here at this meet," added the two-time Olympian.
