KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia hit a new low in the Sultan of Johor Cup (SoJC) today, suffering a humiliating 9-3 defeat to Australia, marking their fifth straight loss at the Taman Daya Stadium in Johor Baru.
It marked the first time Malaysia have failed to secure a single point in the round-robin stage since the Under-21 tournament's inception in 2011.
Earlier in the competition, Malaysia lost 3-2 to New Zealand, 4-1 to Japan, 4-2 to India and 2-1 to Britain.
Malaysia will face Japan tomorrow in a classification match to decide fifth place.
Two-time champions Australia, who needed a victory to reach the final scored through Liam Henderson (second, 53rd), Dylan Downer (third), Ian Grobbelaar (seventh), Jesse Absolom (15th), Toby Mallon (33rd), Daykin Stanger (37th), Patrick Andrew (55th) and Lucas Toonen (60th).
Danish Danial Abdul Wahab (24th), Azimuddin Kamaruddin (32nd) and Harris Iskandar Osman (50th) netted for Malaysia.
The Young Tigers earned nine penalty corners and scored two, while Australia converted two of their three attempts.
Results: India 3 New Zealand 3, Britain 3 Japan 1, Malaysia 3 Australia 9.
