KUALA LUMPUR: Who will lead Malaysian football as the election deadline for FAM's 2025-2029 executive committee draws nearer?
Speculation has intensified over who will be the next FAM president amid talk that the incumbent, Tan Sri Hamidin Amin, will not defend his post.
Sources in the national football fraternity claimed that Datuk Joehari Ayub, who is a current FAM vice president, could be a contender for the top job.
However, one of the most widely talked about potential candidates is Tuanku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the former FAM president. Supporters of his return feel that his experience and legacy could help restore Malaysia's football fortunes.
Many believe that the national body needs a leadership overhaul to address longstanding issues in the sport.
"This is a pivotal moment for football in Malaysia. The leadership needs to change, and it's time for individuals who are no longer effective to step aside. We need fresh ideas and new leadership to bring about real change," said an insider.
With the elections for the new FAM executive committee expected for March next year, the presence of key figures like Joehari has ignited much debate.
Meanwhile, fans and football pundits alike eagerly discuss the possibilities of other high-profile names entering the race, including former Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar. However, Khairy has dismissed his entry, citing his current commitments elsewhere.
