Selangor clinch third straight Sultan of Selangor's Cup with late penalty

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor achieved a remarkable milestone by clinching their third consecutive Sultan of Selangor's Cup title, edging out Singapore 2-1 at Merdeka Stadium today.

The victory means Selangor have now won the title 10 times since its inception in 2001.

The spotlight was on Selangor coach Nidzam Jamil's bold decision to appoint acid-attack survivor Faisal Halim as captain.

This match marked Faisal's first start of the 2024-2025 season, where he played the entire first half.

Although the Sultan of Selangor's Cup is not part of the official M-League calendar, Faisal's 45-minute appearance is a positive sign ahead of next week's FA Cup final against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT).

Ronnie Fernandez scored Selangor's opening goal in the 82nd minute.

Faris Ramli equalised for Singapore five minutes later.

Selangor were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, with Alvin Fortes scoring from the spot.

Earlier, Selangor Veterans defeated their Singapore counterparts 2-1.
