Historic rivalry in Sultan of Selangor's Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Thank you, fans, for sustaining the storied football rivalry between Selangor and Singapore.

That's the message from Raja Muda Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on eve of the highly anticipated Sultan of Selangor's Cup.

The Red Giants will take on the Singapore national team at the historical Merdeka Stadium tomorrow, reviving a rivalry that has thrilled fans both sides of the Causeway for decades.

"Merdeka Stadium has often been the backdrop for unforgettable Malaysia Cup finals between Selangor and Singapore. This match is more than just football, it's a celebration of the rich and healthy sporting rivalry that has connected our teams for generations," said Tengku Amir.

He added: "The spirit embodied in this Sultan of Selangor's Cup stands as a testament to both teams and their fans, who continuously reach for the future while holding fast to their roots."

Former Selangor coach, Michael Feichtenbeiner, also shared his sentiments in a brief message: "Great event - wish Selangor much success."

Current Selangor coach, Nidzam Jamil, said his men are looking forward to this nostalgic match.

"Everyone is excited and ready to go. This match is also a key part of our preparation for the FA Cup final on Aug 24.

"Playing at Merdeka Stadium, where this rivalry began, will allow our players to feel the history and significance of this competition."

Nidzam, who played in the Sultan of Selangor's Cup back in 2003, fondly recalled the time he and his teammates triumphed 4-1 against Singapore at the Shah Alam Stadium.

"I remember watching these matches and playing in them, it's something that stays with you," said Nidzam.
