KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak could host the track cycling competition for the 2027 Sea Games if they are able to build their new velodrome in time for the event.
National Sports Council (NSC) director general Abdul Rashid Yaakub said construction work on the proposed velodrome has yet to begin though assures that there have been "positive developments" in the planning process.
"There have been positive developments and it (new velodrome) is part of Sarawak's plans," said Rashid recently.
"We have yet to decide whether it will be used for the Sea Games.
"But we don't have to worry as we already have the National Velodrome in Nilai, which is also of international standards.
"We can always do the event there (Nilai) if it (Sarawak's velodrome) is not ready in time for the games. But if Sarawak does complete it in time, then we have options."
The Sarawak state government had last year announced plans to build a new velodrome in the state of the same, if not better, standard than that of the National Velodrome.
Earlier this year, Sarawak stated that the construction of the velodrome would begin after the conclusion of the Sarawak Malaysia Games.
The federal government last week confirmed that Malaysia will host the 2027 Sea Games using a decentralised model. The events for the games will be held across Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Sabah and Penang.
The Klang Valley had hosted the majority of events when Malaysia last hosted the Sea Games in 2017.
