KUCHING: Sarawak will co-host Southeast Asia's biggest sporting event, the 2027 Sea Games.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his closing speech at the 21st Malaysia Games at Perpaduan Stadium, Petra Jaya, tonight.
He said that preparations must begin now to ensure the smooth organisation of the 2027 Sea Games.
"Given Sarawak's capability in hosting the highly successful Sukma, on behalf of the Malaysian government, I agree to co-host the 2027 Sea Games with Sarawak.
"In the cabinet meeting this Wednesday, we will officially confirm this decision," he said.
Following this decision, Anwar added that the Federal Government machinery, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and all sports associations, is requested to begin all the necessary preparations.
Anwar also congratulated the athletes from all participating contingents who displayed a very high level of unity at Sukma.
"Due to this spirit, I have been informed that the performance of the athletes has also significantly improved.
"Our entire team achieved excellent results, with seven national records and 21 Sukma records broken, thanks to the extraordinary spirit of our young athletes," he said.
In this regard, Anwar said young athletes who were outstanding at the Sukma should begin enhancing their training immediately.
"We want Malaysian athletes to perform well at the Sea Games," he said.
