KUALA LUMPUR: The 78th Umno General Assembly kicked off today with party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi raising the Sang Saka Bangsa flag at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre.
The ceremony began with Zahid witnessing Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, followed by Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and Puteri chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi, hoisting the party flag, accompanied by songs of the respective party wings.
The ceremony continued with Zahid raising the flag as delegates present sang the Umno song, "Bersatu, Bersetia, Berkhidmat".
Zahid was accompanied by Umnno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and party secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Also present were vice-presidents Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Today marks the start of the Umno General Assembly, after the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings' assemblies concluded yesterday.
It is estimated that a total of 64,333 delegates are attending the general assembly which ends tomorrow.
Previously, Zahid said this year's AGM will focus on winning back Malay support.
