PUTRAJAYA: PKR will leave it to the police to investigate a former member of parliament from the party allegedly involved in a sexual harassment case.
Its information chief Fahmi Fadzil said the party would never tolerate any of its members being involved in criminal activities, including sexual harassment.
"Matters involving sexual harassment are issues that we must not tolerate.
"However, regarding the allegations that a former PKR MP was involved in sexual harassment, we have not received any information yet, and we leave it to the police to conduct their investigation," he told a press conference.
On Monday, police said they have opened an investigation into a former member of Parliament who is alleged to be involved in a sexual harassment case involving a woman at a prominent supermarket in Kota Damansara.
Petaling Jaya police chief, ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'afar, said that a report was received from the victim, a woman in her 20s, on Aug 6, claiming she was sexually harassed twice by the man while at the supermarket.
He also said that police detected an 18-second video circulating on social media concerning the allegations and is being conducted under Section 507 A and Section 509 of the Penal Code.
Shahrulnizam said the investigation revealed that the accused works for a statutory body and holds the position of non-executive director.
He added that the police will also record the man's statement to assist in the probe.
Separately, Fahmi also called for media practitioners who experience sexual harassment while on duty are urged to report the incident to the authorities immediately.
