Blinded in one eye, Harith finds strength in entrepreneurship

JOHOR BARU: Nine years ago, Harith Luqman Ismail, 29, was blinded in his left eye by a hard object, altering the course of his life.

Despite this, Harith adapted to life as a visually impaired individual, refusing to succumb to sadness. Instead, he now runs a successful food business at a stall in Bandar Baru Uda.

The incident occurred when Harith, then a student, was struck by a toy thrown by a child.

Doctors discovered the nerves at the back of his eye were damaged. Initially heartbroken, Harith lost confidence and struggled with his right eye's sensitivity to light, frequent headaches, and the loss of sports.

He chose to keep his damaged eye, opting for a prosthetic. Over time, Harith accepted his fate and is thankful for the support of his family and friends, none of whom have belittled him.

After facing unemployment, Harith ventured into business, starting with roadside boba drinks before expanding to turmeric chicken rice, turmeric beef, Black Mamba chicken (a name I came up with), and dendeng (spiced dried meat).

"Alhamdulillah, the response has been great," he said.

Harith prefers independence and doesn't seek sympathy for his disability. Despite initially wanting to keep his story private, he now shares it to inspire others, especially after his before-and-after photos went viral.

"Alhamdulillah, I've received a lot of positive reactions, and some even shared their experiences with me.

"I wish for prayers and support as I aspire to become a successful entrepreneur and a valuable member of society," he added.
